Where to Stay Before You Sail: Our Guide to Ushuaia Hotels
By Vámonos Amigo Ushuaia Team
People ask us all the time where they should sleep before their Antarctic voyage. Our answer depends on one question: do you want to walk everywhere, or do you want the view? Ushuaia is small, but the hotels split into three very different experiences.
On the Beagle Channel: Los Cauquenes Resort + Spa. If you have one night before a voyage, this is our pick. It sits right on the shore of the channel your ship will sail out on, with a spa, pools and a quiet, lodge-like feel. It's about 6 km (10 to 15 minutes by car) west of the port; ask the hotel about its shuttle into town.

Up the mountain: Arakur, Las Hayas and Los Acebos. These hotels sit on the hillside above town, with sweeping views over the bay. Arakur is the most luxurious, set in a nature reserve with a famous heated pool. Las Hayas and Los Acebos are classic, comfortable choices on the road toward the Martial Glacier. You'll need taxis to get into town, but the sunsets are worth it.

Downtown: walk to the port. If you want to stroll San Martín Street, shop for last-minute gear and walk to your ship, stay in the center. The newer City Centro by Marriott is a few blocks from the harbor, and there are smaller hotels and apartments steps from the pier. You'll trade the views for convenience.

One last tip: December through February is peak cruise season, and the best rooms fill months ahead. Book your hotel the same week you book your ship.
